Mickey Mouse Cake/Apples/Cake Pops/Rice Krispies

June had rolled around again and that meant it was another birthday for my son. I realized that I hadn't done much decorating in the last little while when I thought of what cake to do. We researched cake pops, a new trend thanks to Bakerella, and made a caramel apple inspired by Disney parks' bakers and makers. I set aside many hours to do this cake and surprisingly, it took the least amount of time. The biggest pain in the neck? The stinking apples.

What did I learn? Whew. More than I can remember. Red fondant is a PAIN to dye (buy Duff's pre-made buttercream kind. Tastes a lot better too). Making Mickey cake pops are hard so we used mini-mini Chips Ahoy and they turned out to be a 1000 times easier. When making caramel apples, make sure I have a pot big enough with plenty of chocolate in it. Otherwise, they're be a million times harder to make. I was shocked when mine didn't turn out as great as Disneyland's. Why? My pot of chocolate was probably a tenth the size of theirs. Plus, they charged a whopping $9.50 for theirs! I also learned that once you realize how to do something, it's that much easier even after you've taken a break.

  1. Hi, I will love to do this Mickey Mouse Cake for my son´s 2nd Birthday... I am not an expert in bakery and I have a few questions about the fondant:
    1) Does you apply black fondant to the whole and then on top of it apply red fondant ?
    2) Does the ears where apart or you covered them with the same piece of fondant from the big circle?
    Thanks in advance!
